Every young woman has an idea of what their perfect wedding looks like, but what we seem to always overlook is how much a wedding actually costs. Your wedding does not have to cost an arm and a leg and with enough planning, you can have your dream wedding and still save money. Here are some easy ways to save money and still have a grand wedding.
1. Have your wedding and reception at the same venue. This is effective for a number of reasons. You cut down on the cost of transport from one venue to the next. Your photographer and videographer may also give you a cheaper package since you need to take their transport costs into consideration. Or better yet, have the entire ceremony and reception in your own yard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
2. Ask family and friends to pay for some items. Although this may sound taboo, consider how many people feel that shopping for a wedding gift is a hassle. Gather your family and close friends and break down the cost of the items and ask them if they are willing to help pay for any. At my wedding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my parents, god parents, aunts and uncles helped us pay for our cake, photography/videography, music, shoes and decor, treats for guests, so all we had to pay was the venue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], food and honeymoon. A huge cost saver.
3. Open an account. This has become very popular over the years and I would encourage anyone to consider this option especially if right after the wedding they are moving into a new home. It also eliminates the hassle for guests having to search for gifts or getting multiple gifts through the registry. And if you have a generous guest list, you may be able to make back all the money you spent. The money can be used to pay bills after the wedding, or home improvement.
4. Have a separate ceremony and reception. This way you can get the best of both worlds. Invite close family and friends to the ceremony and lunch/dinner. This is the part of the wedding which costs the most money. And invite other friends and acquaintances to the after reception. This way everybody gets a piece of your day and you save money in the end.
5. Rent center pieces. A simple way to save money is to ask your decorator to rent centre pieces. Many brides are left with these vases or centre pieces which they have no use with after the big day. Renting the pieces means you don't have to think about storage and you save at least half the amount you would normally pay for centre pieces.
6. Have a cocktail reception. Again another taboo idea but a great way to cut down the cost of food. Cocktail or finger foods tend to be much cheaper than a full plate of food which can run from $120- 190 per person. Having a cocktail means you can more variety in the dishes and you don't have to fork out a load of cash for half eaten plates of food.
7. No children invited. This is a very touchy subject for many persons but you never know unless you discuss. The reason I suggest this idea is because children do not eat a full plate of food and you still have to pay the price of a full plate of food even if they only eat half a plate. You can also try to negotiate this with your caterer but it's a good way to cut down on costs and give the adults an opportunity to shake a leg freely.
8. Let your invitation be your token. One thing I was totally against for my wedding was have a token for each guest. We created a wedding invitation which also served as our token which everybody still has in their homes when we visit. We chose a glass invite with our picture and the invite. It saves money and for those of you who have dozens of ceramic pieces from different weddings in your home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a breath of fresh air.
9. Choose your date wisely. Contrary to popular belief, flowers can be very costly and depending on the time of year, it can cost you an arm and a leg. Getting married close to Valentines, Mothers Day is definitely going to cost you more in flowers than during the more off peak times like July- November. Even consider having your wedding during the week instead of Saturday or Sunday. This costs less and people tend not to stay as long because of other commitments in the week
10. Cut down on the cake. Usually a huge feature for most weddings, cakes can run from $2000- $4000 depending on the type,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], style and amount of cake you want. There are other alternatives. For our wedding we had a 200 cupcake wedding cake. It was different, everyone got a cupcake to go home and it cost us only $1200.00,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Great savings.
