ps is a viral infection of the parotid salivary glands. These glands are located just below and in front of the ears. They produce saliva, which drains into the mouth and helps to break up and digest food. Mumps is a disease, usually of children, caused by a virus. With mumps [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your salivary glands swell. Specifically, these are the parotid glands, and they are located below and in front of each ear.
Sings and Symptoms of Mumps
The most common symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite followed by onset of parotitis (swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears―on one or both sides).
Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tiredness and loss of appetite followed by swelling and tenderness of one or more of the salivary glands, usually the parotid gland (located just below the front of the ear). Approximately one-third of infected people do not have apparent salivary gland swelling.
The primary ― and best known ― sign of mumps is swollen salivary glands that cause the cheeks to puff out. In fact, the term "mumps" is an old expression for lumps or bumps within the cheeks.
The incubation period-the time from when a person is first infected with the virus until the first symptoms develop-is usually 16 to 18 days, although it can be as long as 25 days. Infected people can spread the virus 1 to 2 days before symptoms start and for 5 days after symptoms start.
Sufferers often have a dry mouth and are feverish with headache and difficulty swallowing. Mumps slowly settles and does not usually cause lasting effects. Sometimes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you catch it after puberty, mumps will cause swollen, tender, inflamed testicles and may later cause subfertility in a minority of those affected.
It usually takes about 14 to 21 days to develop symptoms after being exposed to the virus (the incubation period). About one in three children with mumps don't get any symptoms.
The swelling of the glands can make it difficult for you to open your mouth and to eat, drink or speak. This usually lasts for up to 10 days.
A physical examination confirms the presence of the swollen glands. Usually the disease is diagnosed on clinical grounds and no confirmatory laboratory testing is needed. If there is uncertainty about the diagnosis, a test of saliva, urine, or blood may be carried out; a newer diagnostic confirmation, using real-time nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, has also been developed. An estimated 20%-30% of cases are asymptomatic.
The body temperature may rise to 40oC and the swelling can feel oppressive and sore. The earlobes stick out and the child's face eventually looks very swollen. The child experiences pain when opening their mouth. In mild cases the swelling may only last three to four days, but it can go on for a week or more.
